Hale and Dorr LLP, one of Boston's oldest and largest corporate law firms, will merge with the Washington law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering LLP, senior partners said yesterday, marking the most significant combination to date in an ongoing round of consolidation and geographic expansion that is remaking Boston's legal community.

The two firms, which each had revenue of more than $300 million last year, said the deal has been approved by partners on both sides. It will create an organization with about 1,000 lawyers and a structure splitting power equally between Hale and Dorr, whose client roster includes many of the region's top technology and pharmaceutical companies, and Wilmer Cutler, one of Washington's highest-profile firms. Wilmer Cutler is noted for its securities practice; it represents many major corporations and brokerages, including Bear Stearns & Co. and Credit Suisse First Boston.

Hale and Dorr managing partner William F. Lee, who will be co-managing partner of the new firm, said the deal set to close May 31 will double the number of specialized practice areas both firms now offer.
